Pinecone stores vector embeddings and related metadata and returns nearest-neighbor results for semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation and agent memory. An index declares its schema (dense vectors, sparse vectors and full-text fields), and queries can combine them with metadata filters and server-side reranking. Namespaces separate tenants inside one index, and integrated inference lets applications upsert and query with raw text while Pinecone generates the vectors.
It is used by developers building RAG chatbots, semantic search over documents, recommendation features and long-term memory for agents. Official SDKs exist for Python, Node.js, Java and Go, with community SDKs for Ruby, Scala and PHP; integrations include LangChain, LlamaIndex, an MCP server and AI coding tools, and metrics can be exported to Prometheus and Datadog.
The Starter plan is free but restricted to AWS us-east-1, 1 project, 2 users, 5 indexes, 100 namespaces and 2 GB of storage. Builder is a flat $20 per month with higher limits and cloud/region choice. Standard and Enterprise are pay-as-you-go with $50 and $500 monthly minimums, billing storage per GB-month and read/write units per million at rates that vary by cloud and region, plus optional support plans and a HIPAA add-on. Bring Your Own Cloud is priced through sales.
